SCG off to an Award-Winning Start; prepares for Tulsa regional

STILLWATER, Okla. – The growth in Stillwater High School’s color guard program, SCG, is evident as Winter Guard contest season reaches its halfway point.

SCG Blue just completed its third competition of the season with their show “Break the Code,” highlighted by a Finals appearance at Winter Guard Internationals regional competition in Kansas City two weeks ago. In Finals, Blue placed 10th out of 30 other color guards from around the region.

Meanwhile, SCG Gold is coming off a first-place performance in the Scholastic Regional A at the Winter Guard and Percussion of Oklahoma contest held at Piedmont High School this past weekend. Gold’s show is entitled “Dandelion.”

“I could not be prouder of the hard work both Blue and Gold have put into this season so far,” said SCG Director Darin Williams. “The growth and improvement from each rehearsal and competition has been a pleasure to watch.”

Both Blue and Gold continue their seasons this weekend when they will perform at Winter Guard International’s Tulsa regional held at Broken Arrow High School. Gold’s scheduled performance time is Saturday at 1:40pm with 15 units competing for just three finalist spots. Blue will perform at 4:56pm on Saturday in a class of 34 units with 17 finalist spots available.

After WGI-Tulsa, both squads will compete at WGPO events in Catoosa and the state championships held at Union High School. Prior to the state championships, SCG will hold a community performance on April 11 at 7:00pm at Pioneer Fieldhouse.

“Considering we begin rehearsals immediately after marching band ends, our actual contest season goes by incredibly fast,” Williams added. “I expect our students will continue to work hard and improve over the second half of the season, but I hope they take a moment to enjoy each remaining rehearsal and contest.”

SCG is under the direction of Darin Williams and part of the Stillwater Public School’s Band Program. Stillwater Bands is under the direction of Kevin Zamborsky, Tricia Bailey-Bovenschen, Megan Perkins, KG Robinson and Katie Genevro and serves nearly 550 students in grades sixth through twelve in the Stillwater school district.
