Stillwater & Perkins marching bands place first at competition
EDMOND, Okla. – Last Saturday, the Stillwater Pioneer Marching Band and the Perkins-Tryon Midnight Regiment kicked off their marching band contest seasons at the Deer Creek Invitational, with both bands finishing first in their respective classes.
The Pioneer Marching Band’s
show, entitled “Bloom,” placed first in Class AA during preliminary
competition, and third overall in the finals competition that evening, when all
bands compete with one another regardless
of school size.
“I am very proud of our
students for persevering through unusually high temperatures and wind,” said
Kevin Zamborsky, director of bands for Stillwater Public Schools. “The judges were very positive about our show,
and I am excited about our
potential and future growth throughout contest season.”
The Midnight Regiment’s
show, “Black Swan,” gave Perkins-Tryon a first-place finish in Class A, and a
fifth overall place during the finals competition. The Midnight Regiment placed higher than
several larger bands at the competition.
“When we were planning for
this year, we decided it was time to compete at tougher competitions,” said
Randy Goodnight, director of bands for Perkins-Tryon Public Schools. “Our
students never backed down to the idea of this challenge, and I was proud of
their performance.”
Both Zamborsky and Goodnight
expressed after the competition how grateful they were for the support from
parents and the community to help make marching band season possible for their
students.
“There is something
special and different about band contests,” Zamborsky said. “Everyone in the
stands is there for the sole purpose of supporting the bands. Furthermore, the
fans show their support and appreciation for all bands, even the ones they’re competing
against. It’s an incredible atmosphere, and is completely different from
similar types of events. It would not be possible without the parents, alumni,
and community helping support us.”
The Pioneer Marching
Band will continue their marching contest season on Saturday, October 5, when
the Pioneers compete at the Mustang Invitational Marching Festival at Mustang
High School. The Midnight Regiment competes
next Saturday, September 28 at the Stallion Battalion Marching Invitational
hosted by Oologah-Talala High School.
